UNIMEDTH/SH AKURE HOSTS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS WALK AND OUTREACH
In recognition of Cancer Awareness Day, the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital/Specialist Hospital (UNIMEDTH/SH) Akure conducted a two-day campaign focused on breast cancer prevention and early detection. The event featured a city-wide awareness walk and interactive educational sessions.
On Day 1, participants, led by the Head of the Radiation and Clinical Oncology unit, Dr. Ndidi Okunnuga, walked through the city streets, culminating at the NEPA neighborhood market. Dr. Okunnuga and her team engaged market women in a discussion on breast cancer, stressing the importance of monthly self-breast exams. She also demonstrated the self-examination process, encouraging attendees to spread the message within their communities. Dr. Okunnuga highlighted that, though rare, men can also develop breast cancer.
The campaign continued on Day 2 with educational sessions at various clinics in the hospital, where the team educated patients and visitors on cancer prevention and early detection, advocating for regular screenings as a proactive health measure.
The hospital offered free breast examinations to attendees, allowing them to benefit from professional screenings at no cost.
The Acting Medical Director, Dr Adesina Akintan represented by the Head of Admin of the hospital, Mr Luyi Abiodun reiterated UNIMEDTH/SH’s commitment to community health and reinforced the essential role of early detection and education in the fight against breast cancer.
