HAEMATOLOGY AND VIROLOGY

It gives me a great pleasure to introduce the department of Haematology & Virology, UNIMEDTHC, Akure. Here, we manage patients with haematological diseases, hepatitis patients and provide diagnosis, care and support for people living with HIV.

We run ART clinic on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and Haematology/virology clinic on Thursdays. Newly diagnosed HIV positive patients who are linked to care are seen from Monday to Friday. We have a total number of four hundred and ninety (490) Haematology patients that have received care in the department at one point or the other and treatment current for HIV patients is two thousand, five hundred & thirty one (2531).

Under HIV program, we do monthly program meetings, monthly seminars & quarterly Quality Improvement meetings. HIV program has 11 thematic areas: Adult HIV Clinic & treatment care, Adolescent HIV treatment care under Operation Triple Zero (OTZ), Paediatric HIV Clinic & treatment care, Prevention of Mother to Child Treatment (PMTCT), Adherence Counselling Unit, HIV Testing Services (HTS), HIV Laboratory, Molecular laboratory, Record unit, Pharmacy, & Data unit.  The program is funded by The U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), through APIN PUBLIC HEALTH INITIATIVE, a Non-governmental Organization that stands in as implementing partner for H. Other programs within the HIV program are Orphan and vulnerable children (OVC), Differentiated care model, prevention & treatment of Tuberculosis, cervical screening, gender based violence, pre-exposure and post-exposure HIV prophylaxis care, case management Team (CMT) & Index case testing (ICT).

The relevance of the department are: (1.) we help other units involved in patients’ care to make laboratory diagnosis (2.) treat and care for patients (3.) we are involved in teaching (4.)research
